Kate Highstrete, a SOLOW Brand Ambassador, introduces herself as our guest blogger- We are truly inspired by Kate and her work!!!
Hi! My name is Kate and I am a professional ballet dancer with the Los Angeles Ballet. We Just finished our season dancing a new works program, which had choreography by four amazing, strong women; Sonya Tayeh, Stacy Tookey, Josie Walsh, and Kitty McNamee. Now that the season is finished we are on a break for the summer until we go back to rehearsals and performances in the fall. One of the great things for dancers about having a break like this is that we have time to do other physical activites that we don’t have as much time for while we are in the midst of the season, such as Pilates, yoga, gyrotonics, and hiking.
My favorite thing to do to prepare my body for dancing is Pilates, which I also teach at Ballet Bodies, a ballet inspired Pilates studio in West Hollywood. There is nothing like Pilates to find and strengthen the deep muscles of the body and to create muscle tone in a lengthened and elegant way. One of my biggest challenges as a dancer is that I have scoliosis, or a curvature of the spine, and Pilates has been so beneficial for finding what is center and straight for my body. Sometimes having scoliosis has seemed like too big of a challene to continue dancing but fortunately Pilates has allowed me to continue to do what I love.
Stay tuned as I will be posting about other ways I stay in shape throughout the off season as well as posting photos of me in the new Solow x Free People Collection!!!!
Xo Kate
